ALTAIR
A pirate captain who lost his crew to mutiny and is trying to rebuild, he's currently lost at sea and adrift without his usual magic. As a spellsong, Altair doesn't need to cast using the traditional methods, instead able to use his voice alone... shame a siren cursed him to turn his songs into a siren's call.
Now searching for a way to undo the curse while running out of time to get back to the safety of their home shores, Altair and his crew are in dire straits... quite literally, as the treacherous waters they're in are known as the Dire Straits.
Upbeat and energetic, flirtatious and outgoing, Altair is easy to get along with and chat to, but has a ferocious temper beneath that laidback demeanor. He prefers to avoid trouble and tries to keep his temper in check... to only occasional success.
ANASTASIA ÉVE RAELLE
Only daughter of the noble Raelle family, she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and yet still somehow manages to be the most difficult woman to put up with. She's currently fiercely devoted to trying to live a totally average and normal life away from all the stress of being a noblewoman; she just wants to take her money and run, and is trying to make that a reality.
The truth is that there's more to her than meets the eye... but what exactly is she hiding? Some of her words and phrases seem to be ridiculously modern in comparison to her more typical fantasy roots...
Anastasia is prone to wearing her heart on her sleeve and her bizarre expressions on her face. She sees no reason to censor herself or tone down her off-putting personality, as she's never needed to before. She can get away with damn near anything, being a noblewoman, and she will make use of that for all she's worth.
LLYR OF THE KINGSBLOOD
King of the fae and damn proud of it, Llyr has never once set foot outside of their realm to see the rest of the world. Why would they? There are humans out there! Humans and fae have always been at odds, and with the threat of war looming on the horizon, Llyr's perfectly content to have things stay just as they are, without ever looking to an uncertain future.
The truth is that Llyr isn't really the one who was supposed to be King. Two of the Kingsblood were created this time, and the other fae was to become the King, only for them to agree with Llyr to have Llyr crowned instead. Knowing that they aren't the true King, Llyr has a massive chip on their shoulder about their status.
Flirtatious and curious, with a mean streak and a desire to just have a damn good time in life, Llyr wants things to stay exactly as they are. They love their life. Why would they ever want that to change? They need to make sure their friend stays silent about the truth...
MOBY (REN AZIROV)
A former nobleman in competition to take up the title of Lord of his territory, Ren abruptly abandoned his position, changed his name, and joined up with a guild for no explained reason. He left his beloved sister behind and didn't even give her an explanation. He still refuses to talk about his past or why he did any of this. But why care about that when you can live in the moment?
The truth is that Moby has ties to the Deity of Destiny, Yzros, who eternally resurrects Moby for their own amusement. Remembering his previous lives, he chose to forego his current one so as to avoid the pain of getting close to others and losing them again.
Jaded and apathetic, hidden behind a cheery facade, Moby is just going through the motions now. He sees no real point in trying to fight Yzros's control of his life, because how exactly are you supposed to fight a god? So he doesn't, and so his life will eventually end only for him to be reborn yet again.
TEÀRLACH AINSLEY
Exalt (monarch) of their country and well on their way to becoming a tyrant. Teàrlach couldn't care less about that, because what truly matters is that they're in control. Ruling Sceih Lor with an iron fist is the least of their worries. They have a dangerous situation on their hands with the neighboring country, after all; if they aren't careful, war might break out between the two powers and it's a war that Sceih Lor will likely not win.
Abused and treated poorly as a child, Teàrlach has taken to heart the message that if you can have power, you must seize it for yourself. They led a bloody conquest through the previous royal family to claim their place and killed their aunt-slash-advisor to ensure they wouldn't be used by anyone else.
Cold, calculating, and cautious, Teàrlach is both paranoid and desperate to have some manner of control because they never did while growing up. Desperate to keep their power, they'll do anything to ensure no one ever steps on them ever again.
YZROS, DEITY OF DESTINY
The Deity of Destiny is one of the gods of the world of Aelios. Yzros specifically governs the fates of mortals and delights in watching them struggle against overwhelming odds. They find mortals truly fascinating and absolutely adore them - but in the way one adores watching ants go about their duties, and burns them with a magnifying glass when they're bored enough.
Their current favorite is Moby, a mortal they have put through all sorts of harrowing situations, just to see how he reacts. Earning the eye of the Deity of Destiny is not a blessing at all, as they are not content to simply let one live without their interference.
Massively curious and inquisitive, they like learning and exploring the world around them, though they are stubborn and set in their ways and beliefs. They love a good story or a good show, but dislike it when they are proven wrong. Contradictory and petulant, Yzros will use their power as they see fit, regardless of who is hurt by it.

Well, it's like... Do fae die, or cease to exist or any reason?
no subject
[They hum as they think, inclining their head a bit. First to one side, then to the other as they raise a finger to their chin.]
Not exactly? Though if my assumption is correct, this may be something of a similar process to scattering?
[Which probably isn't something a human understands, since they understand this concept of "death".]
It's when a fae's essence - their magic - returns to the world. The fae in question certainly still exists and will reform, though will not be exactly the same as they were once.
[So yeah, it's magical fae death.]
no subject
Does that make sense?
[Honestly, they're already doing better than most Abnormalities she's tried to explain 'humans stop being alive when you inflict grievous wounds on them' to.]
no subject
I see! How terrifying... To think that there could be such a permanent, final act...
[They press their fingers to their mouth, eyes wide as they consider this. A fae who could never come back. Their magic scattered, gone forever...]
Though that does raise another very strange question, doesn't it? Why was I brought here? I will simply return to my world, should I scatter.
[my dude you have 0 proof of that,,,]
no subject
If you're here, whoever's running this probably at least thinks they have a way to keep you from returning? I don't know if they're right or not, but they did manage to bring you here in the first place, so...
[But also Evangeline's pretty sure if they tell some human how terribly unlucky they are to be here while mortal, that that human is going to punch them in the face.]
no subject
Well, that is true. Teleportation magics aren't unheard of, but no human can use such things... Though I suppose our captor could be a fae.
[It's not like Llyr has no enemies, after all. There are always those who would seek to scatter the King for whatever reason. But still, to go this far... They hum a bit as they consider, wings fluttering slightly as they tap a finger to their blue-painted lips.]
So I will have to ensure I am careful to avoid such a thing, just to be safe. I would rather not have my scattering be... permanent.
no subject
Do you think a fae would do this? I'm only familiar with a few at home, but they wouldn't usually go through all this trouble...
[There's easier ways to get dinner than setting up a murdergame.]
no subject
[...]
So yes, I could see one of mine doing such a thing.
[we fae are just Like This.]
Though admittedly, I'm not sure what the point would be in dragging me into such a thing. There are plenty of ways to scatter one of the Kingsblood, so it isn't as though such an elaborate plan would be necessary. I suppose it could simply be done for their amusement?
[sadism. we can't rule out sadism.]
no subject
[Sadism always a popular option!]
I don't think it's anyone from my world because if it was, there would be some obvious monetization aspect. Like selling other people tickets to watch us kill each other or something like that.
[Said fairly matter-of-factly.]
no subject
["cute"...]
We fae don't have anything quite like that, so I have little to compare it to. Should we need another's assistance for something, we trade in favors, though most fae are fiercely independent. Are many humans reliant on this... "monetization aspect"?
[boy they have no idea.]
no subject
[This is somehow harder to explain than the death thing.]
no subject
[i am so sorry you have to explain your hellscape capitalism world]
no subject
[it sucks!]
no subject
[Hmm! How curious. Imagine requiring pretty little coins to get someone else to protect you. Couldn't be the fae.]
Do you have a lot of these coins?
no subject
[Do fae have parents? Please tell her she doesn't need to explain parents.]
no subject
Parents? What are those?
[yet again, i am so sorry about fae bullshit.]
no subject
Okay, one, where do new fae come from, and two, do fae age and grow?
no subject
New fae come into being when enough magic has gathered into one place to form a new fae. Unless one is of the Kingsblood; we are created by the Kingmaker so our existence is a bit different.
We do not age or grow, though I am familiar with these concepts! Humans start out as tiny beings that then must learn and change to become bigger!
[They sound so proud. They learned one whole thing about humans before coming here. Incredible. Are you glad you don't have to explain this too?]
no subject
[...well, some people are assholes even to their own family... but they're supposed to be close, anyway.]
no subject
[All fae are backstabbing assholes, so you never really want to get too close to another to begin with.]
Fascinating... It seems there's simply so much to learn about humans!
no subject
[She definitely isn't interested in humans, specific or in general.]
Do you have the concept of love, in general?
no subject
Oh, yes we do. Though it is very rare for any of the fae to experience such a thing, as we usually don't go looking for it. Still, we have plenty of stories about love!
[Most fae think of it as a "hahaha what the fuck" sort of way because it gets in the way of their usual distrustful nature, but they are familiar with it at least!]
no subject
Well, families are supposed to love each other too. It's different from romantic love, but close enough for you to get the idea.

Dad doesn't talk much, but he works hard to take care of people. Sometimes he'd hold two or even three jobs at a time, just so we had enough money to live a little more comfortably.
Even though we were poor and my world is a miserable place, I had a happy childhood thanks to them.
no subject
Tell me more of your world. Do you have fae there? Some people here have told me they aren't familiar with fae at all!
[Not surprising if the fae have been keeping to themselves, but the looks they get are kind of weird!]
no subject
So, we do have fae, but they tend to eat humans? I did definitely assume you would eat me if I ticked you off when we first met, sorry about that.
no subject
[They sound delighted by this, actually?? Eating humans, how quaint!]
We have little need to consume anything, although we can if we so desire. Fae are beings of pure magic; we exist on the ambient magic that exists throughout the world.
[And in this one, apparently, unless they have been physically altered and they just haven't noticed yet. Which is totally a possibility.]
no subject
Can't say I'm not jealous, not having to afford food would be pretty nice. [Though they wouldn't have that problem anyway, what with the lack of money system.]
no subject
You must use these coins even for food? My, is there anything that doesn't require them?
no subject
[This is entirely serious.]
no subject
But they will when they do figure it out?
[yeah.]

[...oh!]
Though I suppose you would prefer not to go without your parents?
[the whole murdergame aspect didn't occur to you first????]
no subject
But if I could do it, almost everyone’s world sounds nicer than mine.
no subject
[...like they didn't even consider it...]
I'm certain you'll find somewhere suitable for you all once this is all over. How bad can it be?
[llyr,,, you've been tuning out all the mastermind questions this whole time, you are gonna die,,,]
motive;
He has been minimal in his reactions indeed, mostly observing everyone else's; it's not impossible for someone else to be doing the same, whatever their reasons. ]
Oh, that depends.
People can desire for others to kill each other for various reasons. Some beyond which can be hardly easily fathomed.
And some for far more simple reasons. We could always ask, though our captor has no reason to be forthcoming.

[Sayuri shivers and looks away from the motive envelope. She gives a small, practised proper nod.]
Sayuri isn't even certain what the present would be if she went back that far. And nothing important enough would change.
afterparty
He does, at least, have a few snacks from the party on a plate sitting next to him.
Whatever he found must have been interesting enough to steal his attention or he's too lost in thought to notice Altair even as he looks through the books, because he doesn't look up until he's spoken too, looking up at him like he's been shaken out of some sort of reverie. ]
You may think me strange for this, but I thought the smell of old tomes may steady my heart more than a gathering could.

[At the very least, Anastasia's current audience isn't entirely put off by whatever that was. Gregor regards her with a raised eyebrow, but otherwise placid expression before shrugging.]
I'd call it unflattering, personally. Not exactly wrong, though.
[And since Anastasia is looking at him, I would be remiss to not point out the giant insect appendage replacing his right arm. He also has a toothpick between his teeth instead of a cigarette...for now. Maybe the overseer will be kind to him and give him some smokes later.]
